If the Lord Had Not Been On Our Side...
Psalm 124 |
Steppingstones to God
We are on a journey to God and heaven. But many times it feels that we take two steps forward and one step back. It is not a journey of constant progress.
This is the lesson in the Psalms of Assent, fifteen psalms (120-134), which were sung as Israel travelled to Jerusalem for the feast days of Passover, Tabernacles, and Pentecost.
There is a repetitive pattern of three. As we journey to the place where God lives, there are trials, even persecutions. Through these troubles we learn trust in God until we reach our destination through victory in Jesus.
Three-fold Pattern in Psalms of Assent
Trouble 120, 123, 126, 129, 132
Trust 121, 124, 127, 130, 133
Triumph 122, 125, 128, 131, 134
Psalm 124 is a "trust in God" psalm, written by King David.
I am fascinated by the thought that Jesus Himself sang these Psalms of Ascension, traveling to Jerusalem with His disciples for these feasts.
May we learn from these Steppingstones to God as we travel toward out destination of heaven.
